The Barbary ape is actually not an ape at all but a monkey. They range in size from 55-75 cm tall and can weigh 4-10 kg. They are sturdy and have yellow-grey to grey-brown fur. They can live up to 22 years.

Their diet consists of fruit, leaves, seeds and invertebrates. They forage for food in the day and sleep high in trees or rocks at night. They live naturally in Northwest Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Gibraltar. Their habitat consists of clearings and undergrowth of cedar, oak and pine forests which is currently threatened by logging.

They are peaceful creatures and live in groups of 10-30. The female chooses her male mate and the male takes an active role in raising the young.
